Your Waste: Plastics

Mini Recycling sites

Residents can recycle plastic bottles only at many of Wiltshire mini bring sites. To avoid the wrong plastic being put into containers at these sites, only plastic bottles can be recycled.

Please wash and squash bottles and put the lids back on. This helps to create a vacuum within the bottle and reduces the space required for each bottle - this allows us to collect more in the containers before they need emptying.

Household Recycling Centres

We can accept plastics which are lablled 1,2 or 3 at Wiltshires Household recycling Centres (please see table below).

Any plastics that are not 1,2 or 3 or not labelled at all cannot be recycled in Wiltshire at the moment.

If you are unsure if a plastic item can be recycled please ask any of the supervisors on site for assitance.

Why plastics aren't collected at the kerbside

Plastic is very light and bulky, making it costly to collect, sort and transport. If we collected plastic bottles from the kerbside, it would involve many more trips to the recycling depot at Lower Compton Basset. More lorries on the road is unsustainable.

However the Council understand that this is a service that alot of residents want, and options for collection shall be considered in the near future.

Reprocessors

Plastics 1,2 and 3 that are collected in Wiltshire are baled and taken to J A Young in Leicester to be recycled.

For more information about what happens to plastics when collected in Wiltshire please see the online recycling videos.
