What does it mean for farmers? The Agricultural Waste Regulations of 2006 have introduced a number of new controls concerning the disposal of agricultural waste. From the 15th May 2006 inclusive farmers must: 1) Stop burning their waste - Farmers are now only allowed to burn certain wastes such as crop residues, hedge trimmings and other untreated wood in the open - check with the Environment Agency by calling them on 0845 603 3113. 2) Stop burying waste on their land - All landfill tips on farms must close by the 15th May 2006. The Environment Agency will assume that farm tips will have ceased operation by this date, unless direct evidence is provided otherwise. 3) Comply with their Duty of Care - Farmers have a legal obligation to take all reasonable steps to ensure that their waste is disposed of safely at an appropriately licensed facility. If farmers give waste to waste management organisations, they must also make sure that they are authorised to transport, recycle or dispose of it safely. Please Note: Farmers not complying with the regulations will not only face a steep fine, but will also risk losing their Single Payment under the provisions of the Cross Compliance Regulations |
